What is packet burst?

Packet burst is a phenomenon in computer networking where a large number of packets are sent or received in a short period of time. This can lead to network congestion, packet loss, and decreased overall network performance.

Several factors can cause packet bursts, including high bandwidth applications, network bottlenecks, and improperly configured network devices. In some cases, packet bursts can be intentional, such as in distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks.

To mitigate the effects of packet burst, network administrators can implement quality of service (QoS) policies, prioritize certain types of traffic, and use traffic shaping techniques to better manage network traffic flow. Additionally, increasing bandwidth capacity, optimizing network configurations, and setting proper buffer sizes can help reduce the impact of packet bursts on network performance.
